"Plough It On Again" is a single past the English stone band Genesis, from their 1980 anthology Duke. Information technology reached number 8 in the UK Singles Chart,[2] becoming the ring's 2d top 10 striking. The lyrics, by Mike Rutherford,[3] concern a man who does nothing more than than scout television receiver. He becomes obsessed with the people he watches on information technology, believing them to be his friends.
The vocal is featured on the Flash FM station playlist in the game Grand Theft Machine: Vice Metropolis Stories.
Background [edit]
"Turn Information technology On Again" was congenital from leftovers from projects past each fellow member: The 2nd set of verses was conceived by Tony Banks for A Curious Feeling: "Nosotros kind of put [Rutherford's riff] – the bit he didn't use on Smallcreep'southward 24-hour interval, curiously enough – with the bit I didn't utilise on A Curious Feeling, and put these two together. We fabricated it much more rocky; both bits became much more than rocky. My fleck was a bit more epic, and Mike's bit was a bit slower and a bit more heavy metallic. And then Phil gave information technology a much more straightforward drum part; perhaps neither of us would have idea that we would desire that on that bit [...] We put on one or 2 other bits, besides, that ended upwards from there".[4]
The song is characterised past a rhythmic structure uncharacteristically complex for popular music only common in the band's progressive rock back catalogue. The verse/chorus sections alternate time signatures, half dozen

4 ). The vocal – written mostly by Rutherford, with help from Phil Collins – was originally much slower. Rutherford explains on the Songbook DVD: "I had this riff [plays lead riff on guitar], but at the fourth dimension I was playing it similar this: [plays slower]. And Phil said, 'Why don't you endeavour information technology in a faster speed?' and so he said to me, 'Practise you realize information technology is in 13
8 ?' and I said, 'What do you mean, it's in thirteen? It's in four
4 , isn't it?' 'No, information technology's 13.'"
Collins confirms: "You lot can't dance to it. You meet people trying to trip the light fantastic to it every now and again. They get on the off beat but they don't know why".[5] Tony Banks adds: "You can't dance or clap forth to it because of that time signature. When we play it alive, y'all can e'er see the audition getting caught out."[half dozen]
"Turn It On Once more" has been a favourite at Genesis'southward shows. Consequently, the group's 1999 compilation Plough It On Once more: The Hits and its 2007 expanded reissue, subtitled The Tour Edition, were named later information technology, as was the band's 2007 Plough It On Again: The Tour reunion tour. In the 1980s, the band would attach a medley of 1960s pop songs (referred to by the band every bit the "Blues Brothers" medley, equally the start song was "Everybody Needs Somebody to Beloved"). The vocal would be returned to its anthology form for the We Tin can't Dance tour and the band would later on regard the medley as a poor decision.[ citation needed ] Peter Gabriel played drums when he reunited with his one-time bandmates at 1982'due south Half dozen of the Best show and found himself baffled by its time signatures. "Information technology was typical Peter: 'Oh, I tin play this'," observed Tony Banks. "But once he started playing, he kept looking effectually going, Oh fuck! 'Turn Information technology On Once more' does funny things – it's truly a Genesis song."[6]
Originally written and recorded in the key of B Major, it was transposed down to A for the 2007 bout and further downwards to M for the 2021 tour to compensate for the lowering of Collins' voice.
The Duke Suite [edit]
"Turn it on Again" was originally a department of a long suite written by the band that was split up up into private songs before it was released. At the time, was but an interlude between the preceding and next sections of the suite.
Chart operation [edit]
"Turn It on Over again" was a moderate striking in North America, but failed to reach the Meridian xl except in regional markets such equally Chicago (#31 on WLS-AM).[7] However, it was a bigger hit in Europe, particularly in the Great britain where it reached #eight.[8]
